Drugs & alcohol Testing
The Hidden Impacts on Your Plumbing Business
The consumption of alcohol is widespread within Australia, forming a
central part of many social and cultural activities. This, coupled with
the increasing use of recreational and illicit drugs, it’s not surprising
that drugs and alcohol have a significant impact on our workplace. In

• The use of pharmaceutical misuse is on the rise. Between 2010 and 2013, the proportion of people how had misused pharmaceuticals in the 12 months preceding increased from 4.2% to 4.7%
Some sobering facts reported by the National Centre for Education and Training on Addition (NCETA) on employees with drug problems are:
• 2.5 times more likely to take more than 8 days sick leave • 3 times more likely to be late for work
• 3.6 times more likely to be involved in an accident
• 5 times more likely to file a workers compensation claim • 2.2 times more likely to require early dismissal
NCETA has also identified particular workplaces that have a higher prevalence of methamphetamine use than others. Workplaces with young (18-30 years old), male and employed as tradespeople or technicians are at a higher risk of using methamphetamines, such as Ice.
And, with SafeWorkSA reporting that almost one in 10 workers say they have experienced the negative effects of a co-worker’s misuse of alcohol, it’s no surprise that, in September 2015, the Australian Government introduced amendments to the Building Code.
