More than half of all the people on Earth now use social media. Latest data show that 4.14 billion people across the planet are using social media in October 2020, equating to 53 percent of the total global population.
The social media revolution has given consumers the most powerful voice they ever had and it has also forced businesses to be more engaging, transparent and responsive.
Social media can help your business achieve more with less money but to take advantage of the many benefits social media can bring to your business, you need to be ‘likeable’.
There is a certain science to a successful social media page and below we are listing some of the most important things you need to do so the ‘likes’ start flooding into your pages.
1. Listen first, and never stop listening
Businesses can no longer ignore their clients’ needs and frustrations when the conversation can be made public and reach huge audiences in a matter of seconds.
Remember that communication is 50% listening and when clients feel heard they become loyal and can provide you with a lot of useful feedback that will help you improve your service.
2. Know who you are targeting
Marketing only works if you know who you are aiming at and it is no different with social media. Your language, your images, your tone should align with who your business is targeting at.
Social media allows you to nail your target audience way beyond the age and gender and you should use that into your advantage.
3. think like a consumer
Since 2013 Facebook’s feed algorithm focuses on serving relevant content and generating meaningful social interactions. This happened because people sent a strong message that they were not going on social media to be “sold to” or read things that didn’t add value to them.
When posting things, instead of thinking like a desperate salesperson, think like a customer and post things you would like to read, see or watch – not because they relate to your business, but because they add value, information or entertainment.
4. respond quickly (to bad and good comments)
This might sound harsh but if you don’t have a thick skin to receive and respond to negative comments online, you should not have any social media pages for your business.
My advice is to embrace what you can’t control – and you can’t control what people will write about your business; but you can control how you respond to it. Remain professional, polite and take it as a feedback on something you could do differently next time.
Stay focused on the learning and remember that it is irrelevant who is right or wrong, but how you respond to a happy or angry customer will make a huge impact on your brand.
5. Be honest
This is a no-brainer – no one likes to be lied to. It is ok to use stock photos, but don’t pretend the guy in the photo is in your team. If you have done a good job with someone’s plumbing, ask permission to show it off online, but don’t show a bathroom you have not worked on and pretend you did.
6. ask questions
Remember what I said about communication? It is 50% listening and 50% talking, so by asking questions you generate engagement and have some insights on what your potential customers like or need.
7. share stories
People like to do business with other people, so make sure you share some of your story on social media. It is also a good idea to share the spotlight with customers, partners, staff, contractors and show the human behind your business.
Stories are also easier for people to memorise and it is often through human stories that we can start feeling a certain away about a brand.
