The Marshall Government has acted decisively to protect both the health and jobs of South Australians during the COVID-19 pandemic. We have successfully held the virus at bay while steadily reviving economic activity.
Our record investment in infrastructure and job training programs is creating critical employment opportunities for South Australians looking for work.
We’re investing $16.7 billion in roads, education, sporting and health infrastructure, which complements a $4 billion economic stimulus that will generate thousands of local jobs.
We’re working to protect existing jobs by reducing payroll tax and land tax, and providing grants of up to $20,000 to eligible small businesses to keep them and the jobs they provide afloat.
And we’ve allocated an additional $5 million for a new Business Advisory Services Program, which will allow small and medium- sized businesses to access professional services to develop sustainable business strategies.
Of course, keeping people in training is going to be crucial to enhance the employment prospects of South Australians looking for work, and that’s why we’re investing millions in skills and training programs.
The JobTrainer initiative, combined with Skilling South Australia, represents a $288 million co-investment by the State and Australian governments in a skills-led recovery from COVID-19.
JobTrainer gives young people, school leavers and job seekers access to low-fee short courses and qualifications that can unlock opportunities for work or further training and help meet industry needs.
JobTrainer comes on the back of our Skilling South Australia initiative, which has seen South Australia outperform the nation in apprentice and traineeship commencements.
Under JobTrainer, we are announcing funding for industry projects that drive employment growth, including support for recruitment and on-boarding activity, mentoring, additional training and certification, personal protective clothing and pre- employment checks.
Registered training organisations and businesses can also access funding under the scheme if they are able to support JobTrainer students into further education or employment.
There are now more South Australians in full time jobs than before COVID hit – the only mainland state to achieve such a feat, with South Australia’s unemployment rate the equal second lowest of all the states.
The majority of plumbers in South Australia are employed in the construction industry, which is experiencing nation-leading growth on the back of the Morrison Government’s HomeBuilder program and the Marshall Government’s schools building program.
The construction industry in SA grew by 2.4 per cent between early July and mid-October, compared to a national decline of 5.9 per cent.
The Morrison Government’s $1.2 billion Boosting Apprenticeship Commencements program (up to 50% wage subsidy) is capped at 100,000 new apprentices – I encourage you to take on an apprentice now as places are fast running out.
